How do you attract/address your audience?

I had many pictures that i had taken for my poster so i didn’t need to go a full length in taken new ones for my magazine I looked at many of the images and I looked at which one would attract the audience the most and would basically immediately let you know this is a horror magazine.
I wanted to cause a sense irregularity through the pictures, making the audience believe that something uncharacteristic is happening because of the pictures suggest something is wrong. Its the aspects of this picture which make it effective, We used 'Photo-shop' to experiment on different effects that could add the pixels and we managed to slightly blur the facial features to add to the scary abnormal effect.
Through previous research, we already know that most horror magazine are aimed at male audiences this is shown through the text, slogans and choice of colour and colour schemes. E.g. the colour scheme for this magazine is black and red both of these colours relate to horror BLACK being the colour of darkness and RED being the colours of blood make a combination that subliminally makes this magazine effective and allows the audience to interpret without telling you.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Well considering having a film trailer, film poster and film magazine, I believe my media products would be distributed by a film company like ’Lions Gate’ a very well known distribution company. Trailers are used to advertise the main film give the audience an insight of what’s to come causes a bit of suspense film trailers are known as the most important marketing strategies for the film.
Having a distribution deal with a company like "Lions Gate" films who are famous company and have done horror films like ‘Day Breakers,’ ‘Dread’ and ‘Harry Brown’ This company has proven success for various films at different levels. This would suit the niche target audience of our low budget project. This could help our film because the name of the company is better known to audiences and a known to produce very good films. Trailers are a short film advertisement of new films, it gives hints about the story line, casting stars and the location of the movie, it can also gives you an incentive to watch this film by showing ratings and you also get comments from the magazine and from the news.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I think have varied outlook within my media product so I decided to change the typically viewpoint of a horror film and its normal target audience, the common horror conventions mixed with a cast which is mainly black youths makes a different convergence of media which you can call 'Urban Horror'. It’s called this because our trailer takes place in a park in the city and we have used everyday lower-class students, from an urban city life and the setting is within a park in the city. A target audience is defined mainly by gender and age range and social background, country or urban, race, family status and special interests. These interests can include anything from political learning's to religion or the particular subject matter of the film. The age certificate is 15 so my age range for target audience will be young adults ranging between 15 to 30.
I think for a film to do well its best to appeal to different audience’s horrors usually targets white middle-class/young people which are mainly male, but my inclusion of Rap music does tend to relate to black working-class young people this broadens the range of my target audience. The decision to have a young black cast from the city allows urban audiences to relate with the characters and put themselves in the position because you rarely see proper horror films with them init, Myself and my group were trying to market new genre of media that could appeal to most and I think we was successful in doing so.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My media texts are related in different ways, In the poster and magazine cover I used screenshots from clips and images of our main product to help our audience get a better picture of what’s to expect. The ancillary texts and main images offer more advertisement, as well as the trailer to give the audience a deeper feel to the magazine. A magazine can be used more than a trailer and poster it can be seen multiple times passed through to other family and friends. The magazine also offers more information on the film, for example spoilers coming up, interviews and information of what they might expect, or simply pictures of their starring characters this gives the audience more to think about because if it’s a well known actor their more likely to watch it. In the society we live in, when we like a media product we tend to want to know all there is about it including the stories, characters and actors involved so we search deeper and no we the current technology you could even find the text from the magazine on the website. On the magazine it has images chosen from the trailer, it directly relates the texts.

Evaluation...

Evaluation-We uploaded our trailer on youtube to know whether we did well and to get other people thoughts and ideas of how the trailer looks and were looking for comments so we could improve in future times. During the same week On Friday We also conducted a screening were we invited many people within out sixth form and teachers to view all of our media products and made questionnaires that ask the participants whether they liked the trailer, poster and magazine and having the choice to each one out of 10. our feedback was predominately very positive with everyone liking each part of my media products, this was good news because within the screening we made sure we had a diversity and contrast of age range which was between 16 up to 50 because teachers were invited too, our trailer was aimed at 15-30 year olds our target audience but every one liked it meaning we succeeded in engaging the audience and we met out target audience.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

This Is My Groups Completed magazine->

Research- As a group we used www.allhorrortrailers.com to look at trailers and to see the contrast convention, shots and characteristics of horror that were shown within most of them. Then we discussed ideas and thought about how we can create our own horror convention which leads to the creation of the 'URBAN HORROR’. We used a video camera to record images that compare to ones we've seen within other horror trailers like 'Blair witch project’. We used sections to create our own horror trailer of the film, adding music. we then used I-movie to decide on what scenes and shots were good and also to play around and put things together in an attempt to meet horror conventions that will attract an audience also I-movie allowed us to use different transitions that can even out each scene making it seem more authentic you can also add effects like adjusting the tones of certain frames to help with the conventions of horror e.g. dark shady tones, red colourings that relate to blood and warning. For my Magazine and poster I looked at many examples on www.Google.com images where i was influenced from seeing some of these and understanding the conventions that i had to follow in order to attract my audience.’ Photo-shop' that was the software suitable for me to achieve in making substantial Ancillary texts to try and get the same layout and professional look that other world known magazines and posters have.

Poster-

My poster is finished and I have a image of it(below), I’ve stuck to the conventions of a horror poster by using the main image to attract my audience, darker and bland colour schemes and odd text which is suitable for a horror poster and if you can see I used the text from the trailer don’t go there which helps bring it back to the urban feel.. The image of (Daniel) looking scared and screaming also helps giving it the horror feeling to help attract the audience.

in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The way we challenged and developed the conventions is that we decided to change and break away from the orgigianl horrow with the fact the mixed "Urban" genre with "horror". unlike other british black films were there gangs and alot of crime and violence eg; kidulthood, bulletboy, shank and greenstreet.

This film aims to target the same audience and the horror audience for a new genre crossover - "Urban horror". From the very beginning the aim is to challenge 'typical' horror conventions within my trailer by straying away from having Villains that maybe masked or their identity might be concealed. I wanted the horror to come within the individuals that are alien or monsters to their surroundings, so it’s as if there is a thing that is causing disarray within the characters.
My idea of using hand held cameras was simply to make everything seem more realistic for the audience to relate to, the realism of it also creates more suspense because your looking at what only the camera man can see and its as if your looking through their eyes, whilst watching meaning your insight is their view. The hand-held effect was necessary because we didn’t have a lot of equipment steady cams and tracking therefore like other low budget horrors ("Paranormal Activity" and "Blair Witch Project"), the handheld style suited the gritty realism of the urban-horror crossover which helps appeal to the audience.A real media product like 'The Blair Witch Project' was strong influence toward my decisions in this trailer especially the fact that they were students.
And this also helped give ideas for our own trailer

Title Film-

The name we chose was MOUNTSFIELD MASSACRE because we used the park and it helps attract our chosen audience and gives it a london feel.

The image below is how we would have our title. Mountsfield massacre - the alliteration of the two Ms makes it memorable and Massacre is clearly a genre specific word. It immediately makes the genre clear - horror. The cracked font suggests breaking, and this suggests horror as the character's world is going to crack.

Editing-Music

I spoke to my group about what type of sounds and music you would hear in a film.. and they gave me a few ideas, and then i went home myself and researched and thought about different types of music that is played in music. like the saw and the voice from one of the characters..
but becuase our trailer was very urban i decided to choose a very known artist giggs who has many tracks which can be used to cause suspense the track is called -dont go there..
and we even edited this as text into our trailer.

Filming3=

On the first part of the equililbrium we decided to finish with the camera is fixated on one person(karl), and have a interview scene with transitions coming after each question is answered this was simply to smoove things down, with music behind this scene, slow horror, emotional music to set the scene this is good because (Karl) did well to make a sense of distress and discomfort in the way he was speaking through out the interview
In The Trailer we edited with 'Real footage of Mountsfield Massacre' just after karl says "just look at the video" then the next part of the equilibrium begins with me filming in the car messing around as students do when their going out, the scene gives the audience a part of the story they can relate to which is young people out having fun together.
we added text in certain parts of the trailer e.g 'A night to remember' which is subliminally refering to the horrors to come and this adds suspense. then after the text its the scene where they are in the park just settling and then toward the end you see one of the students walking of in the dark and the heart beat after which goes in through the end of this scene straight through the build up to the cresendo.

Filming2

With the last bits of filming being finalised we had to show exactly what we want in our story to be like- The idea is; Undergraduates going out camping or just having fun, then at the location of where they are going some of them within the group become corrupted by the very essense of the 'location' and they all need to fight for survival.
This gives the horror feel because its out in the dark, but we have changed the feel of horror a slight bit because the characters will look very urban and modern which could also be used to attract our target audience

Filming-

because of other Work and subjects we started late on the filming.
and that put us behind with time.
but when we started filming we got a lot of footage useful for the trailer.
We have a lot more that we need 2 capture to give us more scenes to put in our trailer

Group Plan..

We had our members of our group in this project and we all decided on what role we would all be allocated through out the project. We are stronger in different areas of this media e.g. Daniel, Karl is good at filming and editing whilst the other members myself Shane and Karl are better at the magazine designs and posters which can give a good advantage of completing the work, with everything spread out.. we all had very good different ideas of what we wanted to give to our audience and what type of audience we wanted 2 attract.
We Discussed the main characters, locations and ideas for scenes and the way could fit Todorov's narrative theory to our trailer with opening equilibrium: beginning, setting the scenes and plot.disruption to equilibrium: crescendo, images of horror conventions etc.Attempt to repair the disruption: maybe a glimpse of hope.

Horror Films-

Horror Films are unsettling films designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. Horror films effectively center on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and strange and alarming events. They deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares, our vulnerability, our alienation, our revulsions, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death and dismemberment, loss of identity, or fear of sexuality.
Whatever dark, primitive, and revolting traits that simultaneously attract and repel us are featured in the horror genre. Horror films are often combined with science fiction when the menace or monster is related to a corruption of technology, or when Earth is threatened by aliens. The fantasy and supernatural film genres are not synonymous with the horror genre, although thriller films may have some relation when they focus on the revolting and horrible acts of the killer/madman. Horror films are also known as chillers, scary movies, spookfests, and the macabre.
Introduction to Horror Films Genre:
Horror films go back as far as the onset of films themselves, over a 100 years ago. From our earliest days, we use our vivid imaginations to see ghosts in shadowy shapes, to be emotionally connected to the unknown and to fear things that are improbable. Watching a horror film gives an opening into that scary world, into an outlet for the essence of fear itself, without actually being in danger. Weird as it sounds, there's a very real thrill and fun factor in being scared or watching disturbing, horrific images.
Horror films, when done well and with less reliance on horrifying special effects, can be extremely potent film forms, tapping into our dream states and the horror of the irrational and unknown, and the horror within man himself. (The best horror films only imply or suggest the horror in subtle ways, rather than blatantly displaying it.)
In horror films, the irrational forces of chaos or horror invariably need to be defeated, and often these films end with a return to normalcy and victory over the monstrous. Their main characters have included "unknown," human, supernatural or grotesque creatures, ranging from vampires, demented madmen, devils, unfriendly ghosts, monsters, mad scientists, "Frankensteins," "Jekyll/Hyde" dualities, demons, zombies, evil spirits, arch fiends, Satanic villains, the "possessed," werewolves and freaks to even the unseen, diabolical presence of evil.

Location2-

Location2 - Is a close friends house..
his house would be good for a horror trailer because its very glum there with dim lighting and because his mum is a surrealist artist and has many scary pictures very creaky floors and doors and has a dark basement which has more scary looking objects This will give the full affect if horror to the audience. because in a film its one of the type of scenes where you would want to avoid

Research-Locations

Mountsfield park-This is a park in my area which has a wide range of woodland areas, myself and the rest of group thought of this place as one of the main scenes and location for our trailer because you get the full of affect of horror for the audience when the park is dark because they can feel as though they were their.
We deciced to do a 'Blair witch project' type of trailer this would be good because you get close and with all the tree and the lack of light it would be harder to shoot from a distance.
